5Pirates would be foolish not to trade Bednar, and he's exactly what the Rangers need
Bednar still has 3.5 years of control. He is from Pittsburgh and the Pirates see themselves competing in the next 2 years. They have promoted most of their top guys this year including Henry Davis, Endy Rodriguez, and Nick Gonzales with Skenes on the way next year. No reason to trade Bednar now. If things don’t go as hoped they can move him next year or the following year at the deadline and still get good value.
Relievers are the most volatile players in the sport, banking on future reliever production is foolish, and the chances the Pirates are WS contenders next year or the year after is highly unlikely so it's all risk for minimal gain
Where did I say World Series contenders?. I do believe they will contend for the playoffs in the next 2 years and the Pirates do as well. All of their top prospects will have graduated to theMLB and gained valuable experience. They will also have the chance to add to the MLb roster as well.To just assume they won’t be competitive because they are the Pirates is just typical blather from fans from other teams. Also the Pirates have Oneil Cruz. Why would they want to trade a valuable asset for a guy whose value is primarily tied to playing a position already occupied by a young star? If they were to trade Bednar it would be for pitching like Porter White Leiter etc. But I doubt the Rangers or their fans would want to do that.
And if relievers are so volatile, why wouldn’t the Rangers look for a rental at a lesser cost?
