5The mariners don't need to replenish their farm system, they need major league hitters now. Also Torrens as the backup catcher assumes Tom Murphy isn't coming back.
Yankees get Bryan Woo to stabilize rotation. Woo performed well in 2023 and has good peripherals, but seems like he might be the odd man out in a very good Mariners rotation. Higashioks is the odd man out at the catcher position since he has no options. Yankees have Austin Wells, Jose Trevino, with Ben Rortvedt as depth since he still has options. Mariners replenish farm system with Everson Pereira, Trey Sweeney, add Kyle Higashioka as a good backup catcher. Most the Mariners prospects are very young, and adding Pereira and Sweeney could help the team in 2024-25 instead of having to wait until 2026-27 for most of their prospects. Higashioka is an elite pitch framer with a decent amount of pop and would be a significant upgrade over Torrens

I will admit, this trade looks pretty bad if you don't believe in Everson Pereira's bat, which is very fair. Pereira is a high strikeout hitter, but has slowly improved each year. Teoscar Hernandez is probably his ceiling. Pereira has the potential to be a plus MLB bat and an average outfielder, but he's going to put up some ugly at bats for a bit.
Looking at this objectively, it just doesn't add up for Seattle. Woo is a young and controllable starting pitcher with a year of respectable MLB performance under his belt. In order for any team to give up a player like that, you need to offer something head-turning, and Everson Pereira--even with the throw-in prospects--just isn't close to being that.
The more I think of it, the more I agree with you, very well put. There was a similar trade to this between these 2 teams a while ago, Pineda for Jesus Montero, and Pineda was coming off a much better season than Woo is. Montero hit increidbly well that year, but Pereira has struggled mightily. I ultimately agree with you, Mariners would need a more proven MLB bat to trade Woo, even if pitching is a big strength of theirs.
