Damn, would I love to see the Rays add Smith. Unfortunately, this trade would make no sense if the Rays trade Glasnow and lose Franco to suspension. The former appears very likely. I have no idea what will happen with Franco though.

In this proposal that came out of my buttocks, I guess I didn't factor in the possibility that Glasnow could be traded. I know the Rays like to operate on a budget but I really don't see it. I put in Paredes to try to get a similar bat to Smith back, but at a different position that the Dodgers could use. And even with Franco out, I believe the Rays are still loaded with young infielders in their system. They aren't as strong in the catching department, to the best of my knowledge. Plus a controllable bullpen piece (Vesia or another). I guess a near Major League ready SP could work as well. The Blue Jays are just me messing around with the 3 team trade. LAD could take a flyer on Kirk's down offensive season to replace Smith's starting position for the foreseeable future (at least until one of Cartaya, Rushing, Yeiner or Liranzo establishes themselves). Even if he can't recapture his 2022 magic, Kirk should serve as a viable bridge to one of those kids. Meanwhile the Blue Jays get a controllable bat who's crushed the ball at every minor league level in hopes of fixing a very inconsistent offense.
The Rays feed local beat writer Marc Topkin all their major personnel plans in advance so he can prepare the fans for trades that may be disappointments. In his offseason review article, Topkin mentioned how hard it would be for the Rays to keep Glasnow. While it's possible he stays through the deadline, I wouldn't bet on it. The demand for him should be pretty high. You're correct that the Rays have a ton of young infield talent, including top prospects Mead and Caminero who were both called up at the end of the year. Unfortunately, none of them can play SS all that well (and those who can don't really have a bat (e.g., Walls)). If Franco can't play next year, it's basically a loss of 5-10 Wins, which is gonna hurt.
