7Why would the Tigers make this deal when McGonigle and Clark’s arrival is imminent?
McGonigle plays short, Clark is an outfielder, and Marte plays second... Not sure what they have to do with the Tigers making a play for an impact bat in a lineup that needs one.
Ever hear of 2B Colt Keith who is 24yrs and is signed for the next 7yrs? Nov. 10, 10:18 p.m. ET: Diamondbacks aren't shopping star 2B Ketel Marte. https://fansided.com/mlb/mlb-insider-gm-meetings-rumors-news-tracker. Tigers are going to be Bregman sweepstakes winner.
Colt Keith played more games as a DH and 3B than a 2B in 2025. He is a career -9 DRS player at 2B. Whereas at third, he is more around league average defensively. You don't pass up on acquiring one of the best hitters in the sport. Tigers have the farm to get a deal done. They could be in on Bregman, but I don't think the Red Sox let him get away. Marte makes more financial sense for the Tigers, with a $19 million luxury tax hit, especially for a team that does not hand out big contracts very often. I bet the D-Backs shop Marte at the Winter Meetings; the original report that they were looking to trade him came from several well-respected sources. D-Backs GM is probably just covering his bases and trying to not burn a bridge, in case a deal does not get done this winter. Again, this is a mock trade site; it's all in good fun.
McGonigle also plays 2B and has worked at 3B in AFL. You are correct Clark is an OF. In fact a centerfielder. Why would the Tiger give up young, talented starting pitchers for a 31 year old seconbaseman with a large contract when they have the same type of hitters as Marte in McGonigle and Clark knocking on the door? This proposal makes absolutely no sense for Detroit. For AZ it gives them the talented SP they need and gets Marte's contract off the books.
McGonigle will play short for the Tigers when ready. They have a hole there. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hope and projection behind your "same type of hitters" statement. Marte is one of the best hitters in the sport. His contract is $19 million on the lux tax books, which is very reasonable for the player he is. Tigers were in on Bregman last offseason and those offers were around $30 million. So, I don't think that Marte's contract is out of the Tigers price range. The Tigers need a hitter that has success against left-handed hitting, as most of their hitters are lefties. So, saying this makes "no sense" for Detroit is just wrong. Detroit has been named a suitor for Marte by multiple outlets. At the end of the day, this is a mock trade site; it's all fun, don't take it too seriously.
Uh, Matt, it would seem that you are the one taking this too seriously with your multiple long winded explanations. Nice attempt at projection. Your turn.
