4Drue Jones is looking like a bust, but he was the #2 overall draft pick 2 years ago and has excellent pedigree. With the Rays system full of good-not-great prospects, they should seek out top tier potential rather than near MLB ready mediocrity. Del Castillo has potential and is cheap.
Why do you think Jones is a bust? He has elite defensive tools and hit above .800 OPS last year.
30% K rate with no power after repeating A ball and turns 21 next week. Not exactly the dude who was in the running to go number 1 overall above Jackson Holliday just 2 years ago. Without a .400 BABIP and drawing walks against dudes who can't control their fastball, he's barely a league average bat after 600 PA in a league his draft position says he should dominate. Gonna have to flip a switch, because he doesn't look like a future big leaguer right now. I have zero interest in the BB rate of a top prospect against A ball pitchers. The dude has been a massive disappointment. If a 5th round 21 year old in his 2nd year of A ball has a 125 wRC+ due to a high BABIP and BB rate rather than his power and hittability, you'd consider that 5th rounder a bust. Druw Jones has been the biggest disappointment since Moniak.
Fair enough. You could be right. Still, he profiles as an elite CFer, which gives him a high floor, and he is only 20, which means there is time for it all to click with him. I wouldn’t call him a bust yet (not that you did). If Arizona makes him available, I would be very happy to see the Rays trade for him.
