2The Mets need pitching, and have said publicly that will be a priority. Corbin Burnes, Gerrit Cole, Crochet, and McClanahan are all in the same category to me. The Mets have plenty of cash, so they should just sign Cole or Burnes and not have to use their assets to acquire pitching. However, if they want to go after Soto in FA, they might use the cash on him and the prospects for pitching. The Rays don't need to trade McClanahan by any means, but with the team playing home games in a minor league park for the next 3 years, I would prepare for a reset. The Rays get a near MLB ready premium arm in Sproat, an above average bat with excellent speed that's a future big league CF or 2b in Jett Williams, and the Mets most recent first round pick in Benge. My priority is to make sure the 2028 team is the best team they can put on their new field, and this trade gets them closer to that.
Love the idea of adding Sproat and Benge. Still think Williams is crazy overrated.
